Team BDS acquires FC Schalke 04’s LEC Slot

June 29, 2021

Following a 5 month-process, Team BDS has concluded the purchase of FC Schalke 04’s League of Legends European Championship (LEC) Slot. After a thorough selection process led by Riot Games and FC Schalke 04, Team BDS acquired the license for 26.5M Euros.

Starting from 2022 Spring Split, BDS will operate as LEC core member for an indefinite period. It is a great honor for us to have been chosen to be the successor of a such prestigious organization as FC Schalke 04.

Teams BDS’ main goal has always been to compete at the top and to play a leading role in European esports. Since the org's inception in June 2019, BDS has made a point of building a proper environment to allow players to reach their full potential and win titles. By bringing a team from the lower tiers to the top of Europe and the World on both Rocket League and Rainbow Six Siege, BDS has built a reputation for developing talents. After learning a lot from our experience in the LFL, we wanted to build a team that would reflect our values and live up to the expectations of our community.

Our commitment to the academy team is stronger than ever. It has been a real pleasure for us to contribute to the growth of the LFL and to the promotion of the francophone League of Legends scene. We intend, as we have done on other games, to establish ourselves as a club dedicated to fostering talent. As members of the LEC, we can now make our talent shine at the highest European level. Driven by performance, our ambition for the LEC is to feature among the best teams, with the objective of carrying Switzerland to the World Championships one day.

We are proud to follow in the footsteps of FC Schalke 04, which was one of the very first traditional sports organizations to recognize esport as a discipline of its own. We can only admire their work during these two years of LEC, both in terms of performance and social media exposure. We will endeavour to pursue their work in professionalizing and mentoring the esport community. We would like to thank both FC Schalke 04 and Riot Games for their trust.

We also want to thank all our fans and everyone who has contributed to this project because, if we are where we are today, it is mainly thanks to you.

We are thrilled to finally be able to participate in such a challenging and exciting competition. This really is the next step for BDS and we hope to feature among the best in League of Legends. We are grateful towards Riot Games and FC Schalke 04 for placing their trust in our team, and we hope to continue FC Schalke 04’s work in developing esports as a discipline of its own.” Alexandre Lopez, Head of Strategy for Team BDS.

Over the years, the League of Legends scene has developed phenomenally, and FC Schalke 04’s early involvement in the scene was truly visionary. Team BDS is humbled to follow in these footsteps. Today, with the BDS community at our side, we will continue to foster unique talent, striving to reach the highest levels of the competition.” Renaud Pierre Baijot, Executive director of Team BDS.
